The backlog from so many years of apartheid education is immense. Illiteracy rates in South Africa are high at around 30% of adults over 15 years old (6-8 million adults are not functionally literate). In sub- Saharan Africa the number is 90 million children.

Educators in township schools are poorly trained, and without adequate resources have to buy or make ESL educational aids that vary significantly, and are often inadequate.

Most available aids are supplied from the USA and the UK, designed for use in an English mother-tongue environment.

These aids use unfamiliar, foreign and inappropriate typefaces (fonts), pictures and life skills that do not comply with the South African OBE / Curriculum 2005 specifications.

Educational institutions lack adequate funding and timely delivery of resources.

“The Government budgeted a mere R100,00 per learner per  annum in 1999 / 2000 for all learners’ support material  (including text books and stationery).” - Report to the Government by the Review Committee on Curriculum 2005.

This report is available as an E-Mail or could be reviewed on the Edu-Aid CD.
