  • The Pilot Project

Over the past 4 years, Edu-Aid researched, developed, tested and finalized its education aids in collaboration with the Head of Department and educators at Oost-Eind Primary School, Pretoria.

Enthusiasm, excitement and appreciation for the new educational aids was apparent amongst school management, educators and learners who requested that “TraceMats” be added to the list of compulsory stationery that every foundation phase learner should purchase at the beginning of each year.

With an existing stationery list in excess of R300,00 per annum, parents could not be expected to contribute towards the purchase of TraceMats and schools are not able to carry such cost themselves.

Sponsorship was the logical alternative.

The colourful teaching aids not only markedly improved the morale of learners but significantly motivated and increased their participation in the learning process.  As a direct result of the use of the TraceMats, pupils participating in the pilot project had mastered the skill of formulating sentences. In addition, improvements were evident in pupils’

  • fine motor coordination

  • vocabulary

  • general knowledge

  • word building skills

  • distinction between upper and lower cases

  • stationery costs.

TraceMats are also used in bridging classes conducted outside normal school hours, to assist other ESL learners - Grades 2 & 3 to bridge the gap between their mother tongue and English.

The high percentage of illiterate parents with children of school going ages further emphasized the need for effective education aids to promote literacy and numeracy amongst school pupils and their parents, who should help learners with their homework.  Many parents do not have English as their mother tongue and found it difficult or impossible to teach learners proper pronunciations.  The Tracemat with CD provide parents and pupils with pictures & sounds to assist them in determining the correct phonetics.
